About the Philosophy Society

ImageWho are we?

The University of York Philosophy Society is a student run society for everyone who studies or is interested in philosophy. Each term we put on all kinds of events that are designed to stimulate your mind and challenge your preconceptions. Our aim is to make philosophy fun, relevant and enjoyable, and to cover as wide a range of topics as possible. No question is off-limits!

Joining the Philosophy Society is a great way to meet other students who have a passion for ideas and different ways of thinking. If there's one thing we philosophers love to do then it's talk, and if it happens in the student bar over coffee, a pint, or online via our web site, then so be it!

Joining the Philosophy Society costs just £3 per year, or £8 for a lifetime membership, which gets you free entrance into all of our events, including film screenings, pub quizzes, socials, philosophy talks and workshops. All you need is an interest in philosophy, an open mind, and a desire to share your thoughts with others who have similar interests... It couldn't be simpler!

What do we do?

Each term, we organise a wide range of philosophical talks and events. Previous topics have included the morality of vegetarianism, Eastern philosophy, and the history of the vibrator (!), featuring guest speakers from both within and outside the University. Each talk is normally followed by a brief student response, questions, and an informal discussion, followed by drinks in the bar where members can continue the discussion with the speaker and others at their leisure.

Social events include film screenings, pub quizzes and regular philoscoffee discussion groups, so why not come along and join in the fun? Events generally take place at 7.30pm on a Wednesday evening, but check our calendar for details.

How can I get involved?

There are several different ways that you can get involved. Firstly, you can sign up to our mailing list to hear about all the latest events, which are open to all university students. Events are free to Philosophy Society members, 50p or £1 to non-members, or you can join up on the door for £3.

To get the most out of your time here at York we also recommend that you join our online philosophy community, which gives you access to all the hidden areas and features of the web site, including your very own personal profile page, private messaging and access to exclusive study resources. Registering is easy and only takes a couple of minutes, so if you haven't done so already, click here to start exploring!!

Members and visitors can also use our discussion board to talk about philosophy or any aspect of university life, ask for help, advice and feedback on coursework, or just chat to other students who share your interests. The discussion board is open to everyone, so you don't have to be a member of the society to use it, but again you will need to register in order to get the most out of the site.

The Committee

Finally, if you like what we're doing and want to help out (or if you don't and think that you could do better!), why not run for a permanent position on the committee? Elections take place annually around the beginning of the Autumn term, and we're always on the lookout for people to help organise and advertise events etc. If you're interested, please This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it for further information.
