Perhaps more of a linguistic question, but what are 'aesthetics'? What is it for a property to be of an aesthetic nature? Are all experiences we have upon viewing something aesthetic, and if not, which are?

Experienced Philosopher
I shall have a stab.

Aesthetic experiences are experiences of Beauty and The Sublime, of things which are beautiful or sublime, or of beautiful or sublime things. (The third is seeing-as, the second is just seeing.)

The question now is: which is it; is there Beauty or beautiful things, or things seen beautifully?

Our ability to change our tastes, and to be influenced by others, and the divergence of taste and ascriptions of beauty among different cultural groups suggests that we see things beautifully.

What do you think? Are there some things which we could never find beautiful? Can we study the aesthetics of objects we despise? How can we go beyond ourselves, to understand aesthetic qualities we cannot see, but others can?
